 Edward was born in 963 CE to King Edgar of England and Aethelflaeda. Edward succeeded to the throne in 975 CE as a boy after the death of King Edgar. His reign was very short because he was murdered by his step-mother Aelfthryth to pave the way for her son to ascend the throne.

Edward died in 979 CE and interred at Wareham Abbey in Dorset, England. He was elevated to sainthood by church in 1001 CE.
