Edgar was born in 944 CE to King Edmund I of England and Aelfgifu. Edgar was made King of Mercia and Northumbria in 957. He became the King of Mercia after his brother Eadwig's death in 959 CE. He was formally crowned in 973 and received the ceremonial submission of all the other kings in Britain. He is considered the first King of a United England by many. Some of his predecessors were Kings of All England by virtue of being King of Wessex.  He allowed his Danish subjects to retain Danish laws. He organized coastal naval patrols and a system for manning warships. His reign was prosperous and peaceful and he is generally known as Edgar the Peaceful .

He recalled St Dunstan from exile and made him Archbishop of Canterbury. He married Aethelflaeda the Fair in 961 CE and had and son named Edward in 963 CE. He had a daughter named Eadgyth with Wulfryth in 962 CE. He married Aelfthryth (Elfrida) in 964 CE and had two sons named Edmund and Aethelred II.

Edgar died in 975 CE and interred at Glastonbury Abbey, in Somerset in London.
