Macedonia

Perseus
179-168 BCE

Perseus was son of Philip V and the last king of Macedonia. He hoped to reconstitute the Macedonian Empire. Roman general L. Aemilius Paullus defeated Perseus at Pydna in 168 BCE. Perseus was captured and taken to Italy. He died in captivity  (165 BCE). Macedon was annexed as a Roman province bringing the kingdom of Macedonia to an end.

Obverse: Helmeted head of the hero Perseus
         Reverse: Eagle standing on harpa and Nike standing holding wreath and palm.
 Diameter: 23 millimeter. Weight: 7.5 grams.
