Benin ( Dahomey),  Burkina Faso (Upper Volta), Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), French Guinea,  Mali (French Sudan), Mauritania, Niger, Senegal (French Sudan), and Togo were part of the french colonial entity called French West Africa (AOF) from 1905 to 1960.

All of the abouve became independent nations in 1960 but formed a monetary union called West African States to issue common currency except Guinea ( French Guinea).  Guinea-Bissau joined it in 1997.
