Edmund led the defense of the city of London against the invading Danish King Canute. The Witan (Council), meeting at Southampton, chose Canute as King. Edmund fought brilliantly and defeated the Danish forces at Oxford and Kent earning the nickname Ironside. But he was defeated by Canute's forces at Ashingdon, Essex. A peace agreement between Edmund and Canute left country divided, Wessex under Edmund II and Canute controlling Mercia and Northumbria.  Edmund II ruled part of England for a few months.
