Edmund I the Elder was born in 921 CE to King Edward of England and Eadgifu (Edgiva). He became the King of England after his half brother Æthelstan,'s death in 939 CE.  He defeated vikings in Northumbria, Cumbria and Strathclyde. He expelled the Norse King Olaf from Northumbria in 944. He entrusted these lands to his ally, Malcolm I of Scotland.

He had three children with AElfgifu. They were Edwy (EAdwig), Edgar the Peaceful, and a daughter (name unknown). Edmund died at Pucklechurch in 946 CE and interred at Glastonbury Abbey in Somerset, England.
