AEthelbert was born 836 CE to King Aethelwulf of England and Osburga. He was sub-king of Kent between 858-60 CE. He succeeded his brother Aethelbald to the English throne in 860 CE. He had to battle Vikings in his capital city of Winchester. Under his military leadership, the Vikings were cut off on their retreat to the coast and were slaughtered.

Very little of his personal life is known.  He died in 866 CE and interred at Sherborne Abby in Dorset, England.
